Raw Feeding For Puppies

Adding a four-legged fur baby to your family can be exciting but overwhelming. Before you know it, you have read every article on being the best dog owner one can be, and it all becomes somewhat of a blur. Don’t worry we have been there too! That is why we have created this guide to help you understand what is best for your puppy in terms of their diet.

Why a raw diet?

Puppies grow very quickly, especially in their first few months and it’s essential that they have a complete and balanced diet to ensure that their nutrition meets their health requirements. Feeding a puppy raw food, during this important development stage will have many beneficial results, especially if this diet is continued into their adult years.

What exactly is a raw diet?

A raw diet consists of balanced and complete meals, normally with a ratio of 80, 10, 10. This means that each meal is made up of 80% meat, 10% bone, 5% offal, and 5% liver.

Our meals consist of meat (organ or muscle), dog-safe fruit and vegetables, 10% bone, salmon oil as well as vitamins and minerals. Our meals are grain free too.

Benefits of feeding raw early on

  • Raw food has a higher digestible protein content, which is one of the main contributors to a puppy adding body mass as it grows and the development of healthy vital organs, like the brain.

  • It promotes a stronger immune system to fight infections and diseases.

  • Richer coats that are shiny and well-coloured.

  • Healthy coloured pigmentation of the mouth, nose, eyes and ears.

  • Improved dental health.

  • Produce less smelly stools because their raw diet promotes healthier gut bacteria for more efficient and effective digestion.

  • Balanced energy levels.

  • Higher ratio of calcium and phosphorus which is essential for bone growth.

introducing raw feeding into your puppy’s daily routine

Raw food can slowly be introduced into a puppy’s diet, from between 8 to 12 weeks. If the puppy’s mom has been fed a similar raw diet, the process will be a lot simpler because her immunity is passed to them in her milk, as well as the ability to “handle” their new diet.

8 - 16 weeks - four meals per day, splitting their daily food ratio into quarters per meal.

16 weeks - 12 months - three meals per day, splitting their daily food ratio as needed per meal.

12 - 18 months - two meals per day.

The above is a rough recommendation on the average growth of a puppy. This might change depending on the needs of your individual puppy and their lifestyle.

How much should my puppy be fed?

Small breed puppies need up to 10%* of their weight per day in food; more if they are particularly active. Large breed puppies need 4 - 8%*of their weight per day. Adjust as necessary.

Every dog has their own unique metabolism so make sure to keep an eye on their diet pattern to ensure you are feeding your puppy a healthy amount to grow into a strong young dog.

* Research shows that puppies should be fed 2.5% of their intended adult weight food per day.

When should i switch my puppy to adult food?

We recommend that you keep your puppy on our junior range until they are at least 12 months old. However, some dog owners have put their pups straight onto the adult range. Depending on your ‘‘dog owner experience’’ you will know what is best for your puppy.

The main difference between our junior and adult range, is our junior range has leaner human-grade meats to help with digestion.
